Regardless your EMT certification Level, your license will only be good for so long. The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) has established a refreshers class’s process in order to renew each license.
Why do I have to renew my EMT License?
There are several reasons why you should renew your license once in a while. The first reason is quite obvious: it’s because medical care evolve through time and you must be kept up-to-date. New techniques, procedures and equipment are developed to save lives every day. It is very important that you are aware of them and take part of a EMT Refresher Course.
The second reason is to make sure that you keep your knowledge and reflex fresh. This is also why we call it “refresher classes”. Depending on the type of job you are doing, you may or may not face all situations on a weekly basis. For example, chances are that you will not be assisting anyone giving childbirth every week. This is why a good refresher is a good idea if you don’t want to have a blank while facing an emergency situation.
By renewing your license periodically, it ensures the NREMT to remain control over its medical forces. It is important to make sure that everyone is on the same pace and that all medical employee files are up to date.
How do I renew my EMT license?
There are a wide variety of refreshers classes offered so you can renew your license in the State you work. The best way to find out how to renew your license is to contact your department of Public Health or to go on the NREMT site.
When do I have to renew my EMT license?
This rule varies from State to State. In general an EMT certification is good between 2 to 3 years. Refreshers courses requires at least 20 hours of training up to 60 hours for medical specialists (such as Paramedics). Then again, the number of hours and the price for renewing differ from State to State.
What happen if you don’t renew my EMT license on time?
It is possible to get an extension (with applicable fees) in some States. However, if you wait too long before taking your refreshers courses and renewing your license, you might lose it and not be able to practice as an EMT anymore.
