Paramedic & policeEMT- Intermediate Training Goal

The EMT Intermediate training is designed so you become an EMT qualified in advanced emergency care and services by a competency-based training program of didactic (books!!!), clinical (in-hospital instruction and supervised practice of critical skills), and a field internship (supervised experience on a intensive care vehicle).

Keep in mind that EMT-Intermediate competencies vary greatly from State to State. You can also find 2 types of intermediate level:

Intermediate/85: This is the continuity of what you have learned during your Basic level classes. Courses will then become more invasive into specific procedures and use of emergency care equipment. With this certification, you will be able to administer IV’s, use multi-lumen airway devices and you will provide better assessment skills.

Intermediate/99: This is the highest level of intermediate certification. In addition to the I/85 level, you will also get more training, gaining the ability to implement cardiac monitoring and provide more pharmaceutical interventions.

Each certification much be renewed every 2 or 3 years depending on the State you live in. In order to renew your certification you must take certification refresher courses. Refreshers can be between 28 and 40 hours of courses.

Intermediate VS Paramedic

EMT-Intermediate level has as its base the basic EMT program and then has certain proven clinical skills and knowledge to support the skills added to the basic program. The program is not intended necessarily to be a stepping stone to the EMT-Paramedic level. This level does not conflict or compete with the EMT-Paramedic level; it is simply another level that exists as a result of different factors being emphasized. However, if you want to become a Paramedic, you must have completed your intermediate certification (85 or 99). If you want the highest salary as an EMT, you should consider becoming a Paramedic.

How to successfully pass your EMT-Intermediate Level Exam

The EMT-Intermediate level certification is a very important stage for an EMT. It provides him with a full knowledge of several emergency and care procedures along with better assessment skills and rapidity. It also comes with a salary raise and fulfills the entire prerequisite to apply for the Paramedic certification.
